Her mother wrote a very racy, very bitter, somewhat biographical novel titled "Big Girls Don't Cry" 10 years earlier that all of her classmates have read. When she is suddenly invited to eat lunch at the table of the popular "certain girls" who seem to have such an easy time in life, Joy is cautious but secretly thrilled - until she discovers the reason for the invite. Weiner does a spot-on job capturing the angst of a 13-year-old girl who, in a struggle to figure out where she fits in at school, ditches her hearing aid and fights with her mother over how elaborate her bat mitzvah party should be.
The novel alternates chapters between Cannie's and Joy's point of view.
Since Cannie had an emergency hysterectomy after Joy was born, he wants to explore surrogacy. At the same time, Peter decides he wants to have another child.
